Runner's Knee
A common overuse injury causing pain around or behind the kneecap, officially called patellofemoral pain syndrome.
What is Runner's Knee?
Runner's knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome or PFPS) is a common condition that causes pain around or behind the kneecap. Despite its name, it doesn't only affect runners—but runners are particularly susceptible.
Symptoms
- 🔴 Dull, aching pain around or behind the kneecap
- 📉 Pain worsens when running, squatting, or climbing stairs
- 🔊 Popping or grinding sensation in the knee
- 😖 Pain after sitting with bent knees for extended periods
What Causes It?
Runner's knee typically results from:
- Overuse - Sudden increase in mileage
- Muscle imbalances - Weak quads, glutes, or hips
- Poor biomechanics - Overpronation, knee tracking issues
- Tight muscles - Especially IT band, hamstrings, calves
- Improper footwear - Worn-out or wrong shoes
Treatment & Recovery
Immediate Relief
- 🧊 Ice the knee for 15-20 minutes
- 💊 Anti-inflammatory medication (if needed)
- 📉 Reduce running volume
Long-term Solutions
- 💪 Strengthen quads (especially VMO)
- 🏋️ Hip and glute strengthening exercises
- 🧘 Stretch IT band, hamstrings, and calves
- 👟 Get proper running shoes (gait analysis)
- 🏃 Improve running form
Prevention
- Build mileage gradually (10% rule)
- Include strength training
- Don't skip the warm-up
- Replace shoes every 300-500 miles
- Listen to your body's warning signs
