Metatarsalgia

Pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot, often feeling like there is a pebble in your shoe.

What is Metatarsalgia?

Metatarsalgia is a general term for pain in the ball of the foot (the area just behind your toes). It affects the metatarsal bones and joints. Runners often describe it as a burning sensation or feeling like they are stepping on a stone.

Common Causes

  • High Impact: Excessive running on hard surfaces.
  • Worn Out Shoes: Loss of cushioning in the forefoot.
  • Tight Achilles: Forces weight onto the ball of the foot.
  • Foot Shape: High arches can put extra pressure on the metatarsals.

Solutions

  • Metatarsal Pads: Inserts that relieve pressure.
  • Better Shoes: Shoes with more forefoot cushioning.
  • Rest & Ice.
