Guaranteed Entry
A method of race registration that bypasses the lottery, usually achieved by meeting a specific time standard or completing other requirements.
What is Guaranteed Entry?
Guaranteed Entry means you have a secured spot in a race without needing to rely on luck in the Lottery. It is a reward for speed, loyalty, or fundraising.
Common Ways to Get It
1. Time Qualification (Time Qualifier)
The most prestigious method. If you run a certified marathon faster than a specific standard for your age and gender, you get in.
- Boston Marathon: Famous for its strict "BQ" standards.
- New York / Chicago: Also have time standards, though often even faster than Boston's.
2. Legacy / Loyalty
Some races reward runners who have participated for many consecutive years.
- Example: The "15+ Club" at the NYC Marathon (discontinued, but similar programs exist elsewhere).
3. Charity
Committing to raise a significant amount of money (often 5,000+) for a partner charity guarantees you a bib.
4. Deferral
If you were injured or pregnant for the previous year's race, you might have guaranteed entry for the next year (often requiring paying the fee again).
5. Virtual Completion
Some races offer guaranteed entry for the in-person race if you complete their virtual race series.
A lottery spot is a gift. A guaranteed spot is earned.
