BQ (Boston Qualifier)
A marathon finish time fast enough to qualify for the prestigious Boston Marathon, the holy grail of amateur running.
What is a BQ?
BQ stands for Boston Qualifier—a marathon finish time that meets the qualifying standards set by the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.). Achieving a BQ is considered one of the greatest accomplishments for amateur runners.
Why is it Such a Big Deal?
The Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon (since 1897) and requires runners to meet strict time standards based on age and gender. It's one of the few major marathons that require qualification.
Current Qualifying Times (2024)
| Age Group | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| 18-34 | 3:00:00 | 3:30:00 |
| 35-39 | 3:05:00 | 3:35:00 |
| 40-44 | 3:10:00 | 3:40:00 |
| 45-49 | 3:20:00 | 3:50:00 |
| 50-54 | 3:25:00 | 3:55:00 |
Note: Due to high demand, you typically need to beat these times by several minutes to actually get accepted.
