Cut-off Time
Cut-off Time: Beat the Clock or Get Swept
What is Cut-off Time?
Cut-off Time (also called "time limit" or "关门时间") is the maximum time allowed to complete a race or reach certain checkpoints. Miss it, and you're pulled from the course.
Typical Marathon Cut-off Times
| Race | Cut-off | Pace Required |
|---|---|---|
| Boston Marathon | ~6:00:00 | 13:44/mile |
| NYC Marathon | 6:30:00 | 14:53/mile |
| Chicago Marathon | 6:30:00 | 14:53/mile |
| Berlin Marathon | 6:15:00 | 14:19/mile |
| Many local races | 7:00:00 | 16:01/mile |
Checkpoint Cut-offs
Large marathons have intermediate cut-offs at various points:
Checkpoint Cut-off Time Pace
─────────────────────────────────────
Half (13.1mi) 3:15:00 14:53/mi
20 miles 5:00:00 15:00/mi
Finish 6:30:00 14:53/mi
What Happens If You Miss Cut-off?
- SAG Wagon: You're picked up by the "sweeper" vehicle
- Course Closes: Roads reopen to traffic
- DNF: You receive a Did Not Finish result
- Medal?: Policies vary — some races still give medals
Strategies to Avoid Being Cut
✅ Train for your goal pace + 1-2 min/mile buffer
✅ Start in the correct corral (don't overseed yourself)
✅ Account for bathroom breaks and aid station time
✅ Know the checkpoint times before race day
✅ Walk the aid stations, run between them
The Emotional Side
Getting swept is emotionally devastating for many runners. Remember:
- It happens to experienced runners too
- It's not failure — it's data for next time
- The course will be there for another attempt
Pro tip: If you're worried about cut-offs, consider a race with a more generous time limit for your first attempt!
