DNF (Did Not Finish)
When a runner starts a race but doesn't cross the finish line due to injury, illness, or other reasons.
What is DNF?
DNF stands for Did Not Finish. It means you started the race but, for whatever reason, didn't make it to the finish line.
Common Reasons for DNF
Physical Reasons
- 🤕 Injury - Muscle strain, twisted ankle, stress fracture
- 🤢 Illness - Stomach issues, dehydration, heat stroke
- 💥 Bonking - Complete glycogen depletion
- ⏰ Cut-off time - Didn't make a checkpoint in time
Mental Reasons
- Bad race strategy (went out too fast)
- Negative self-talk spiral
- Unrealistic expectations
The DNF Dilemma
Every runner faces this internal debate during a tough race:
Should I push through the pain, or is this my body telling me to stop?
When to push through:
- Normal race discomfort
- Mental weakness (you just don't feel like it)
- Mild fatigue
When to stop:
- Sharp, unusual pain
- Signs of serious medical issues
- Injury that could worsen significantly
DNF is Not Failure
