Wave
A group of runners that starts a race together at a specific interval after the previous group.
What is a Wave Start?
To manage crowds in massive races like the NYC or London Marathon, organizers use Wave Starts. Instead of thousands of people crossing the line at once, they are split into groups (Waves).
Timing
Each wave has its own Gun Time. However, for most runners, only their Chip Time (from when they personally cross the mat) matters for their official result.
Purpose
- Safety: Reduces overcrowding on the course.
- Logistics: Prevents bottlenecks at aid stations and narrow paths.
