Gun Time
Gun Time: The Official Race Clock Explained
What is Gun Time?
Gun Time is the elapsed time from when the starting gun (or horn) fires until you cross the finish line. This is the official "clock time" that ticks away on the big race displays.
Gun Time vs. Chip Time
| Aspect | Gun Time | Chip Time |
|---|---|---|
| Starts when | Gun fires | You cross start line |
| Used for | Elite rankings, prize money | Personal results |
| Affected by | Corral position | No |
Why Gun Time Matters
- Prize Money: Top finishers are usually ranked by gun time
- Course Records: Official records use gun time
- Elite Waves: Front-row starters have identical gun and chip times
Example
If you're in Corral D at a major marathon:
- Gun fires at 7:00:00 AM
- You cross start line at 7:08:32 AM
- You finish at 10:45:00 AM
Your Gun Time: 3:45:00
Your Chip Time: 3:36:28
For most recreational runners, chip time is what really matters for tracking your performance!
