Transition
The designated area and time spent switching between disciplines in a triathlon (T1: Swim-Bike, T2: Bike-Run).
The Fourth Discipline
Transition is often called the 4th discipline of triathlon.
- T1 (Swim-to-Bike): Wetsuit off, helmet on, bike out.
- T2 (Bike-to-Run): Bike racked, helmet off, running shoes on.
Free Speed
Transitions are part of your total race time. Practicing quick transitions is "free speed"—it's easier to save 30 seconds changing shoes than to run 30 seconds faster.
