Start Line
The point of highest nervous energy in a race, where thousands of runners gather in corrals before the starting gun fires.
What is the Start Line?
The Start Line is where the race begins. In large events, this area is divided into Corrals to manage the flow of people and ensure a safe departure.
The Atmosphere
The start line is a mix of loud music, announcer voices, nervous port-a-potty lines, and the smell of deep-heat cream. It is the moment where months of training meet reality.
Key Elements
- The Gun: The official signal to start. Gun Time begins exactly at this moment.
- Timing Mats: These record when you actually cross the line, starting your Chip Time. In large races, it can take 30+ minutes after the gun for back-of-the-pack runners to reach the start line.
- Discarded Clothes: In cold races, runners wear old "throwaway" clothes to stay warm while waiting, then toss them to the side just before the gun. Most races collect these for charity.
Survival Tips
- Seed Honestly: Don't stand at the front if you aren't fast. You'll get trampled and frustrate others.
- Don't Panic: In big races, it's normal to walk for the first few hundred meters because of the crowd density.
- Check Your Tech: Make sure your GPS watch has a signal before you enter the corral.
Everything you need to finish is already inside you. The start line is just where you find it.
