Sandbagging: The Art of the Humble Brag

What is Sandbagging?

Sandbagging is when a runner deliberately downplays their fitness or abilities before a race, only to perform much better than they claimed they would.

Classic Sandbagging Lines

Before the race:

I haven't trained at all for this one. My goal is just to finish. I've been dealing with an injury. I'm definitely not in BQ shape.

After the race:

Runs a 3:05 marathon and BQs by 10 minutes

Types of Sandbaggers

The Humble Braggart

Genuinely doesn't want to jinx themselves, but also wants an excuse if they have a bad day.

The Competitive Deceiver

Strategically understates abilities to catch competitors off guard.

The Chronic Pessimist

Always thinks the worst, genuinely surprised by good results.

The Attention Seeker

Wants maximum congratulations by setting low expectations.

Why Runners Sandbag

ReasonPsychology
Fear of failureLower expectations = less disappointment
SuperstitionDon't jinx it!

Social dynamicsAvoid seeming arrogant
Genuine uncertaintyRacing is unpredictable

How to Spot a Sandbagger

🚩 Red Flags:

  • Strava shows tempo runs faster than their "goal pace"
  • They've run the distance before at predicted pace
  • They're wearing carbon plate racing shoes
  • They're positioned in Corral A while "just finishing"
  • Previous race history contradicts their claims

Sandbagging in Different Contexts

Running Clubs

"I'm slow, I'll stay at the back" → proceeds to lead the pack

Strava

"Easy recovery jog" → 7:30/mile pace

Race Start Corrals

"I put 4:30 marathon" → runs 3:45

The Opposite: Reverse Sandbagging

Peacocking — Loudly predicting unrealistic goals:

Going for sub-3 today!

Actually runs 4:15

Is Sandbagging Bad?

Harmless When:

  • Just managing personal expectations
  • Making conversation before a race
  • Genuinely uncertain about fitness

Annoying When:

  • Used to manipulate corral placement
  • Repeatedly done for attention
  • Makes others feel bad about their achievements

The Verdict

A little sandbagging is human nature — we all want to exceed expectations rather than fall short. Just don't be so obvious about it! 😄

Runner's rule: It's better to under-promise and over-deliver than the reverse.
