Rabbit

A pacer used in elite races to set a fast early pace for the leaders.

What is a Rabbit?

In the context of elite track and road racing, a Rabbit is a runner hired specifically to set a fast pace for the first half or two-thirds of a race.

The Mission

Rabbits are not expected to finish. Their job is to pull the Lead Pack to a fast time, often targeting a World Record. Once their assigned distance is reached, they "drop out" of the race.

Why "Rabbit"?

The term comes from greyhound racing, where a mechanical lure (a fake rabbit) is used to encourage the dogs to run fast.
