McMillan Calculator
A widely used online tool created by Coach Greg McMillan that predicts race times and calculates training paces based on recent performances.
What is the McMillan Calculator?
The McMillan Running Calculator is the Swiss Army Knife of running math. It allows runners to input a recent race time (e.g., a 10K result) and receive:
- Equivalent Race Times: What that 10K time translates to for a Marathon, Half Marathon, or 5K.
- Training Paces: Exact pace ranges for recovery runs, tempo runs, intervals, and long runs.
How It Works
It assumes that if you are well-trained for one distance, you have the potential to hit the equivalent time at another distance.
Example: If you run a 50:00 10K...
- Predicted Half Marathon: ~1:51:00
- Predicted Marathon: ~3:54:00
Note: Most amateurs are better at shorter distances. A 50-min 10K runner often fails to hit the 3:54 marathon prediction because they lack the specific endurance training.
McMillan vs. Daniels (VDOT)
While similar, McMillan offers slightly more granularity in training paces (e.g., "Steady State" vs "Tempo") and is generally considered slightly more optimistic/flexible than the rigid VDOT tables.
Why Use It?
- To set realistic goals for an upcoming race.
- To ensure your "easy runs" aren't too fast.
- To find the right pace for speedwork.
A calculator predicts your potential, but only training fulfills it.
